The bone protrudes obscenely from the tattered skin on my elbow and all I can do is stare at it as it juts out toward the silent New York skyline. I was so busy looking through the windows of the hobby shop; I didn’t see the gravel under my feet until I was splayed out on my ass on top of it, my arm snapping sickeningly underneath me.

Why isn’t it healing?

I’m not sure how long I stare but nothing happens, other than the loss of my life’s blood on the dirty concrete and that the fucking thing hurts worse with every passing second. It takes some effort to get up with just one hand and I cradle my limp forearm as I make my way back to the apartment. Sylar has no clue where I am and I struggle to remember how far I’ve come, the pain making it hard to focus on anything but its insistent beat, demanding my attention. I went further than I’d intended, I think but it’s not that long before I see him running towards me down the deserted street. He’s winded, as if he’s run the whole way but I’m just not coherent enough to ask him how he knew where I was.

“It’s not healing!”

Even I can hear the panic in my voice. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so glad to see him. After almost two years our relationship has evolved from hate to tolerance, to friendship... with benefits but this is the first time I’ve realized how much I need him. My eyes study his earnestly as he speaks. My brain is a panicked haze but I hear it when he says it will heal, that regen here seems to happen at a snail’s pace until the body is asleep. He wraps one hand around me, urging me back toward the apartment and assuring me he’ll stop at the pharmacy and get enough drugs to make me forget I have arms.

“It really hurts.”

I don’t know if it’s the loss of blood but my head spins as we make our way slowly down the silent street, the shadows growing as the sun sinks lower behind the high rise horizon. He keeps up a constant patter of conversation; we’ll get the drugs and head home, he’ll clean me up and it was going to be a surprise but he knows Twinkies are my favorite and he found some in a convenience store in China Town. The prospect of Twinkies actually makes me smile. It may be more of a grimace but the intent is there.

“I haven’t had a Twinkie in years. I love those things. “

He knows I love them, we’ll have them for dessert but he’s going to make sure I eat dinner first with all the healing my body has to do tonight. His monologue continues as we make our way home and I hang on every word. It doesn’t occur to me to wonder how he knew I liked Twinkies, doesn’t seem odd that he keeps kissing my head as we walk or that I’m pretty sure he just called me baby. I need him, and he’s here. Right now, that’s everything I need to know.
